Paulas Capital Region Journey Last few days

Our road trip was coming to an end and a four and a half hour drive from Virginia Beach brought us to Annapolis. I can’t recommend this destination highly enough!

The capital of Maryland and home to the United States Naval Academy, is located on Chesapeake Bay with beautiful marinas, historic buildings, great restaurants and an abundance of local shops.

Our home for two nights was the Westin Annapolis, just 10 minutes walk to the historic district and less than 20 minutes walk to the marina.

A very warm welcome awaited us and the lovely refreshments left in our room upon arrival were very much appreciated and enjoyed after the long drive.

We couldn’t wait to start exploring the area and experience as much as possible during our short time there.

Annapolis is steeped in history and it’s possible to visit the beautiful home and gardens of one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence, William Paca and also Maryland State House where a  certain General George Washington resigned his commission prior to becoming President. You can also enjoy a tour of the US Naval Academy.

Another must is a sightseeing cruise onboard the River Queen where you can admire the harbour and view the Naval Academy from the water.

We also had the opportunity to visit Great Frogs Winery and enjoyed sampling some of their fantastic wines surrounded by their beautiful vineyard.

You’re spoiled for choice in terms of great food and we had the great pleasure of dining in Carroll’s Creek Cafe, a lovely restaurant overlooking the harbour, The Blackwell Hitch, excellent food and service and The Galway Bay Restaurant and Bar.

In all our travels worldwide, The Galway Bay is one of the most authentic Irish Restaurants and Bars we’ve ever come across. Owned by two Irishmen Anthony Clarke and Michael Galway, the General Manager Sean is from Cork and Richie, their fantastic barman is from Dublin!

They serve excellent food as well as drinks and also have a fantastic new whisky bar serving over 200 whisky’s!

You definitely need to visit when in the area!

Whether you are enjoying a visit to Virginia and Maryland as part of a fly-drive itinerary or a city break to Washington, Annapolis is a wonderful destination to include.

Unfortunately our time in the Capital Region area had come to an end but we were leaving with fantastic memories and the promise that we will definitely return to this amazing part of the USA.

Our direct flight back to Dublin was just 7hrs long and we arrived relaxed and refreshed having enjoyed a good nights sleep in lie-flat seats and a light breakfast  in the United Airlines Polaris Cabin.

No two itineraries are the same as there is so much to do and see in these US States, no matter what your interests are.
